Bonus for English 102

1) Well from what I gathered literacy means being able to read and write, and being able to comprehend what you're reading. Cyber is something dealing with technology, being a computer, or virtual reality. So being that, I think cyber literacy means how to use the internet, how to comprehend what the World Wide Web is saying and how to interpret it. Laura Gurak defines cyber literacy as combining features of print and spoken word and it does so in ways that change how we read, speak, think, and interact with others. It does this in a way of being more impersonal, this makes it hard to confront others, and people don't understand sarcasm. I think it is similar to my initial understanding of the term but it defines it better.

2) I really didn't have any trouble understanding any of the chapters nor did I have trouble finding words I didn't understand. I am very literate when it comes to working on the computer, knowing how to use programs, and staying away from certain sites. I can detect sarcasm sometimes but because of it being so impersonal it’s hard to do at time. I really do think that Laura is right about cyber literacy, I think when she says it takes it away from confronting people face to face is true. In today’s society we are making it so we can meet online for meetings, talk to our families without seeing them, and the list goes on and on. There are a lot of great things that are coming out of the new age of cyber literacy but where there is good, there is bad.

3) The only avatar I have ever had might be this thing on face. They have different applications that make you design your own person or simulated person and play a virtual reality game with it. This game is called Sorority Life. I have played with a few times but I really don't like it that much.

4) I really do not forward anything in general but if I do it through text messaging. Also I don't really talk to my friends using email, I just text them. When I am checking my email it’s basically just to find out if I should pay any bills, or any discounts in certain stores that I have accounts in.

5) I used to have a MySpace in high school but since then I use face book. I love face book to chat with my friends, and send messages to old ones to ketch up. Also to "creep" as others would like to put it. I do not have kids currently but if I did I would have tons of restrictions put on face book. For me though I do not share personal information that could harm me.

6)When I am checking out when shopping I don’t mind giving my name, I never had to do that, but I don’t think I would mind. As for a phone number, I am beginning to worry about that more and more because of technology now a day, but if I shop there a lot and I know its safe then I will give it to them for discounts. I do give out my email address but to other certain shores that I shop at a lot. I do not give away my address, there is no reason for them to know that and that goes the same for my zip code.

7) I feel that Bentham is way ahead of his time, because this is a lot like how the internet is. It's a lot like how the internet is in a way that you are able to put up anything you want, make up things, post things, but you never know how someone else will react to it, or interpret it. I bet people back then thought he was crazy when he talked about his philosophies.

8) Throughout my life I think I bought a total of 5 things through the internet. A couple of bathing suits from Victoria secrets, just because they didn’t sell that in the store, and I also bought my Mac book pro laptop computer over the summer, so I could get a good price on it. Currently I don’t think I ever got ripped off. My laptop works great, and it came with a warranty in case something did go wrong. I really don’t have a favorite place to shop online, but I do look on the American eagle website a lot.

9) We should filter out sites on the internet, because now a day things are posted that shouldn’t be allowed to view. We should go even to extremes and block websites, and I believe you can set that on your computer. The sites that support angst, rape, neo-Nazi, pornography, etc. should be banned. As readers, we can choose to disregard the angry sites if we wish. Not everyone has to hold "civility and scholarly ideals".

10) I have only browsed the notes in the back. The only thing I checked out is the flamer’s bible reference. To be honest have not looked at the list of web pages at the end of the book. I think she may be using MLA format as her documentation style but I am no

Hypertext Project

I chose to create my website about a subculture. The subculture I decided to pursue was the art of Taekwondo. I included the information of the sport of taekwondo, pictures I took when I went to watch, I explained different things, like belts and ranks, and also commandments, schools code, some lingo, and some more information to click on. I think the hardest part of this assignment was finding out how to publish it to the web. I didn’t want to do it wrong and screw it up, so I am waiting till class on Wednesday to ask Professor Austin. Some cools things I put in were hyperlinks that when you clicked on a key word it would take you to a different page I made or a new site all together. I put several links to Taekwondo websites throughout my site, including 2 on page 9. I am photography major so I tried incorporating photos in my project as much as possible. Visually seeing the kicks, punches, and blocks helps a lot with visually learning it. I enjoyed making this web page and I think this is a great source of getting information across rather then writing a 10 page paper. Also I think this was more interesting because it incorporated creativity through, photos, colors, fonts, and designing the entire sight, and I think that is what writing a paper lacks.

revising a research paper 366 to 367

1. I have done plenty of research by you can always have more sources, and information to use in your paper. I think if i were to get more research it would be about the effects of childhood obesity.
2. I do not need to re order my paper
3. I think the way i present my points is in a logical format
4. I may be lacking in my trasitional paragraphs. I probably will make someone read my open sentences and see if i need to change or enhance anything.
5. I think i integraded my information i found very smoothly but i would always revice it more and see if i could do it better.
6. I have not put any visuals into my paper
7. I may need to have my quotes blended alittle better in my paper.
8. I have carefully avoided plagiarism in my paper, but i will revice is more to see if i missed any senetences that needed paraphrased.
9. I have analyzed and interpreted the ideas of other.
10. Yes i believe my ideas focus directly on my discussion with obesity.

Pg. 407 exercise 45.1

Oral history is an important way of capturing certain aspects of the past that might otherwise be lost (Freedman 30).While history books relate the stories of great men and great events (Gregg 174), rarely do they include the experiences of ordinary people- slaves, concentration camp survivors, and the illiterate, for example (Freedman 30).By providing information about the people and emotions of the past, oral history makes sense of the present and gives a glimpse of the likely future (Gregg 174).But because any particular rendition of a life history relies heavily on personal memory, great care must be taken to evaluate and explain the context of an oral history (Honig 139).Like any other historical account, oral history is just one of the many possible versions of an individual’s past (Honig 139).

Parenthetical Notes and Work cited
Parenthetical Notes
1) The world’s most advanced bicycle was invented in 1977 by Swiss inventor Ugo Zwingli (Mayer 33).
2) When he first encountered Zwingli’s invention, cyclist Freddie Mercxx exclaimed: “This will either revolutionize road racing or set it back a hundred years!”(44).
3) According to Rupert Brindel, president of the International Bicycle Federation, “The cycling world was in a tizzy about the Swingli frame. Supporters called it ‘the bike of the future’ while detractors said it removed the sport from the sport of cycling.”(Qtd. in Zweiback 202).
4) Zwingli had discovered a revolutionary way to reinforce tissue paper. The result was a frame so lightweight that it would actually gain speed while coasting uphill (Mayer 36).
5) In his Memoirs, Zwingli wrote, “I was overjoyed by how strong the tissue-paper frame was. The first prototype held up well under every test-until the first rainstorm.”(63-64).
6) Zwingli’s bicycle was a mere curiosity until the following year, when he made this second brilliant discovery: waterproof tissue paper (“And Now” 416).
7) The twin brother of Freddie Mercxx, also a world-class cyclist, wrote:
With all other bicycles, the strongest and fittest cyclist wins the race. With the Zwingli bike, the lightest racer wins. I’m tired of being wiped off the track by skinny guys in tissue paper (O. Mercxx).
8) The fate of the Zwingli bicycle was sealed in 1985 when it was outlawed for competition by a vote of 70 to 3 of the International Bicycle Federation (Zweiback “IBF Disposes” 54).
9) Although the following week’s Tour de Finland race was marred by protests from newly unemployed lightweight riders, the cycling world soon returned to normal (LeMoon C17)

College: a time of wonder summary

College: A time of wonder Summary
Basically this article is about how all different groups of indivuals experience different things when coming into college. It’s different from freshmen to older adults to people from all other the world. It was about the changes and college including fear and everyone’s concerns. Everyone has different fears about college, either it being from being on your own, to if you will get along with your roommates, to maybe am I good enough to be here, these are all thoughts people will go through at the beginning of their journey here at school. Coming in as freshmen high schools are making them feel more overwhelmed and anxious than ever before in their lives. I think that college should be something to look forward to and not worry and stress about.

sept. 16, 2009- keywords

The overview that caught my attention the most was the section " Is Fast Food The New Tobacco?" Every article in this section talked about different viewpoints they had on obesity. I also found it interesting now some articles blamed the user and some blamed fast food, whiles others thought that is the media was to blame. I personally feel that people should hold them selves accountable for the food they eat and their actions rather then blaming it on the huge corporations.

Highlights of ch. 9

The main highlights for ch. 9 were as followed:
Learning how to become an active reader by
9.a previewing a text, including previewing a book and periodical articles. Glancing at the table of contents and index as well as the introductory and concluding paragraphs will reveal the amount of information that is import to you as the reader.
9.b highlighting a text, by underlining material to read over again, and highlighing key phrases and passages this is will help out what is important information to you. making a checklist could also be beneficial, such things like putting question marks by confusing passages, connecting ideas with lines and arrows drawing vertical lines in the margin to set off an important section of text, and star especially important ideas.
9.c annotatinng a text, this is done by reading the text a second time and being more critical about it, mark things that are important by recording your responses to what you read.
